Dr. David John Chalmers
David
Chalmers is
considered one of the leaders in the emerging field of consciousness
studies. He is professor of philosophy at the University of Arizona
in Tucson, where he co-heads the Center for Consciousness
Studies. His undergraduate degree was in mathematics
and computer science from the University of Adelaide in
Australia. He was a graduate student in mathematics at the
University of Oxford, and obtained a Ph.D. in
Philosophy and Cognitive Science from Indiana University in
1993, working in the Center
for Research on Concepts and Cognition. Dr.
Chalmers spent two years as a McDonnell Fellow in Philosophy,
Neuroscience, and Psychology at Washington University in
St. Louis, and four years in the Department
of Philosophy at UC Santa Cruz. In 1999 he moved to
Arizona. His book, The
Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory, takes a new position on the fundamental nature
of consciousness.
