Each of the following paragraphs summarizes a Closer To Truth television show and book chapter. The title links to its topic page, with streaming video (as broadcast), extended transcript (book chapter), HyperForum (some), participants, and resources.
What is Consciousness? (show
107), first airs June 2000.
What is Consciousness - our inner thoughts, feelings, personalities -- the hidden "Stuff" of our private Selves? Is there Something Special about Consciousness, Something of the Mind not in the brain? Viewers are asked to think about themselves watching this program. Then, at the same time, to watch themselves thinking. This is self awareness, the interior mental experience we call Consciousness. But what's the importance of studying Consciousness?
Participants:
Chalmers, Searle, Schlitz, Trefil, Wolf
Do Brains Make Minds? (show
204), first airs October 2000.
How does the brain work? What's the latest in brain research? And what's the relationship between the thoughts in our minds and the brains in our heads? Is gray matter all that matters? It's called, "The Mind-Body Problem" and it has enticed philosophers for centuries: Is there something more to the human mind than what resides in the human brain? Is Mind Stuff different from Brain Stuff? Modern brain research - called "neuroscience" -- gives deep understanding of how we sense, think, feel. But can neuroscience solve the Mind-Body Problem?
Participants: Beyerstein,
Chalmers, Schlitz, Searle, Wolf
Strange Physics of The
Mind? (show 112), first airs July 2000.
Why are some physicists suddenly so interested in Consciousness? What is it about Mental Activity that causes such wild speculations? What is it about Modern Physics that defies common sense? Two fundamental theories have changed forever our understanding of reality: Quantum Mechanics describes the very small-scale structure of atoms and their components; Relativity describes the very large-scale structure of space and time. But can theories of physics explain the human mind and how we think?
Participants: Beyerstein,
Chalmers, Schlitz, Searle, Wolf
Can Science Seek The Soul? (show
113), first airs July 2000.
Do you have a Soul? Are you a Soul? What is the Soul? Why do so many people in so many cultures believe in an Immortal Soul, while so many scientists do not? Belief in the existence of an immortal soul infuses human thought and history. This "spiritual essence" - this "soul" -- somehow associated with each human being, is said to transcend death. But given the remarkable advances in neuroscience -- the physics, chemistry and biology of how we sense, think, feel and behave -- most scientists are Materialists, who believe that only the physical world is real. Materialists reject "dualism", which requires some nonphysical component -- call it a "soul" -- to transform the human brain into the human mind. We get the best of both sides.
Participants: Brown, Radin,
Searle, Tart,
Wolf
What is Parapsychology? (show
212), first airs November 2000.
Can claims of ESP, or extrasensory perception, be studied as a science? Can claims of strange, psychic phenomena be subject to the scientific method? Parapsychology is the scientific study of Paranormal or Psi Phenomena. It is the careful investigation of events -- like mental telepathy, knowing the future or bizarre manifestations -- that seemingly cannot be accounted for by natural law or knowledge. The claim that parapsychology is a science excites some, and annoys others. So, is parapsychology a new science or an old fraud?
Participants:
Beyerstein, Radin,
Schlitz, Tart, Trefil
Can ESP Affect Our Lives? (show
109), first airs July 2000.
Can you know the future? Read minds? Heal psychically? Contact the dead? Most people believe that ESP -- extrasensory perception - is real. Most scientists assume that ESP cannot be real. If ESP is real, nothing can be more important. If we admit the presence of things nonphysical, our entire worldview must change. But maybe ESP is just wishful thinking, sloppy science, clever conjuring or outright fraud? Maybe the public is being duped?
Participants:
Beyerstein, Radin,
Schlitz, Tart, Trefil.
